HTML Tips & Site Guidelines

[ line ]

Although it is not necessary to use HTML coding for you auction for those who wish to be creative we have established some guidelines for the use of HTML coding on Oregon Auction.

Please follow the guidelines presented for all your HTML coding and graphics which are added either through posting your items, creating a JustMe page, or otherwise posting to our site.

Our guidelines are meant to help everyone by conserving server bandwidth, and helping to make the pages load as quickly as possible. We want to ensure that our site complies with HTML 3.2 coding. For additional help visit our FAQ & Help section.

HTML & Graphic Guidelines

Graphics should be optimized and under 10 K. The size requirement for posting pictures for your auction is a maximum of 300 x 300 (10K or less).

A great site for optimizing your graphics is GIF Cruncher. You can optimize both .gif and .jpg files.

As of January we now offer the ability to upload your auction images to our server. Please read Image Upload for instructions and information.

If your image is stored on your server enter the complete path to your graphic file such as:

http://www.yourserver.com/image folder/graphicname.gif

NEVER link to or upload any photo or image which is not yours! Linking to a graphic from a site which is not yours is violating copyright laws. Photos and graphics must be your own!

External links are not permitted other then for paid advertising. Please check our Auction Fees before coding to external URLs. Also look under Advertising to learn how to add your banner to our auction rotations.

JustMe pages have the option of using either 200 x 200 for their photo, or 400 x 40 for a banner. Your graphic MUST be linked from your server.

Do not use special characters which may not display correctly in all browsers. They would include: <     >   &   "

No Tables. As our site will conform to HTML 3.2 standards we are not allowing the use of tables in your descriptions. If not properly coding this could cause problems with the display. It will also make your page load slower.

Font tags. Do NOT use <font face=" .... "> as this does not conform to HTML 3.2 standards. To change the size of your font it is recommended to use the heading tags listed in the table below.

If you choose to use font size or font color, then you must read Font Tags below for the proper use.

NEVER include HTML header or body tags in your descriptions!

NO Java or Javascript!

Always check your spelling and HTML coding to be sure that there are no errors which could cause problems with your information be displayed correctly.

See below for a list of HTML codes to use within our auction. If there's a tag not listed get permission before using!

See our Auction Template for ideas for your item description content.

HTML Help

Here you will find a list of HTML codes which will allow some creativity in both displaying your item descriptions, and on your JustMe page.

Please note that most tags are container tags, which means they require both an opening and closing tag. Always remember to close one tag before opening another :) For more information about using HTML visit:

Font Tags: (container tag)

The font tag is probably one of the most misused on the Internet today by those who use WYSIWYG editors!

A container tags define a section of text (or the document itself) and specify the formatting for all of the selected text. A container tag has both a beginning and ending. Most containers can overlap and hold other containers or empty tags. Specific restrictions apply in some cases and you must be aware of what is acceptable. Improperly used tags may appear correctly in your browser, but will not display correctly in all browsers and will fail validation tests.

Very Poor formatting! - Opening a container tag without closing a prior opening tag.

<font color="#23238E"><font size="+1"> text here </font></font>

Using Tags properly: The following are examples of the proper use of container tags.

<font color="#23238E" size="+1"> text </font>

When using font colors it is best to use hex codes from a 216 RGB Color Chart.

[ RGB Color Chart ]

To use the chart the hex code would be Red/Green/Blue for the color you want.
Example:
Red - FF0000, Purple - 990099 Green -339933
